Woodlands

Today only a few strips of indigenous wood survive.
In the dry lands, on the most recent fossil dunes, the Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) is the most widespread arboreal species.
In the depressions between the dunes, above all where in winter water stagnates for a long time, the Raywood Ash (Fraxinus oxycarpa), the White Poplar (Populus alba), and the Small-leaved Elm (Ulmus minor) grow.
In the western section, on the most ancient dunes which have been leveled by time, the typical woodland formation of the plain takes shape with Common Oak (Quercus robur) and European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus).
All around, on the dune crests (the so-called "staggi"), a luxuriant wood of White Poplar, White Willow (Salix alba), and Raywood Ash grows: they are arboreal species linked to wetlands and riparian environments.
